Locating and operating the Adamantine Forge in Baldur's Gate 3 represents one of the most rewarding challenges in the Underdark. This ancient apparatus allows players to craft powerful, high-tier equipment that provides significant advantages throughout Act 1 and beyond. Understanding how to navigate the subterranean area and trigger the forging mechanism properly will save your party from unnecessary frustration.

Gathering the Required Moulds and Mithral Ore

Before you can craft any equipment, you must explore Grymforge to collect specific item moulds and Mithral Ore. Moulds for weapons and armor are scattered across the surrounding platforms, requiring careful environmental navigation to locate. You can harvest Mithral Ore from distinct blue-glowing ore veins situated near the edges of the lower lava streams.

It is best to decide which gear suits your companions' builds prior to activating the machinery. Each piece of Adamantine equipment offers permanent damage reduction or critical hit immunity, making every choice impactful. Ensure you have at least one piece of raw ore and your desired mould placed in your inventory before starting.

Preparing the Mechanism for Activation

Reaching the forge requires lowering the massive platform using a nearby lever system or precision jumping. Once your party arrives at the central anvil, place your chosen mould into the mould chamber and insert the Mithral Ore into the central crucible. After inserting both materials, interact with the forge lever to lower the heavy hammer onto the crucible.

Lowering the platform into the lava basin sets the stage for the final step of the crafting process. However, turning the lava valve will immediately initiate a legendary encounter, so positioning your party strategically is essential. Keep ranged attackers on higher ledges while sending a durable melee character near the lava controls.

Defeating Grym to Complete the Forge Process

Turning the lava valve floods the arena floor and summons Grym, a massive construct that acts as the guardian of the forge. Grym is nearly immune to all standard attacks unless it is standing directly in the superheated lava, which applies the Superheated status effect. Once softened by the lava, Grym becomes vulnerable to bludgeoning damage, particularly from the forge's central hammer.

Lure Grym onto the central crucible by assigning a companion to act as its prime target using direct attacks. Once the guardian stands directly under the hammer, pull the forge lever to strike it for devastating damage. Repeating this strategy while keeping the lava flowing will quickly defeat the construct and allow you to collect your crafted gear.

Retrieving Your Adamantine Equipment

With Grym defeated, interact with the forge lever once more to crush the crucible and reveal your newly forged item. You can eject the used mould by pressing the nearby lever next to the mould chamber. If you have collected a second piece of Mithral Ore, you can repeat the entire process immediately to forge another item for your party.
